Like it or not, we dance to the Google algorithm. We may make all kinds of excuses, or word it any way but that, but it’s the truth.
Yesterday Google launched something that seems to have gone under the radar of many of the noisemakers in our industry. Why I don’t know, but it’s their loss. If you go to Power Searching With Google you can sign up for a six session course, presented by Google, on ‘Power Searching’. This is a certified course and there are even tests! To echo Ed Dale’s (among others) frequent cry “This Is Huge”. This is so huge I cannot understand why the jungle drums aren’t beating fit to bust.
Google is setting out to teach the average user – our customers – how to use their mighty Search Engine the way they think it should be used, the way they believe it’s designed to be used.
How many of your have signed up and taken Class 1 so far? If you haven’t I suggest you unplug yourself from the internet and walk away, quit now because you shouldn’t be doing this job.
You might think you know everything there is to know about SEO and Google but you don’t. None of us do. There is always more to learn and now you are being given the opportunity to learn how Google wants your customers to search for you – right from the horse’s mouth. Video 3 of Class 1, Matt Cutts telling us how sites are found and ranked. Granted it’s vastly simplified. but none the less there are little nuggets of gold throughout this course for those of us who work online. In a post-Panda, post-Penguin world this should be required study.
I frequently say that we are not normal Internet users. This course puts us in the shoes of those normal users, and a user trained by Google at that. It might be fairly low key at the moment, but never forget that Google is an advertising company first and foremost, that’s how they make their money. They want the users to find the sites and adverts that will keep them coming back. They will find a way to teach them, train them, condition them – this is just the beginning.
Get yourself over there, sign up, learn and then apply a little reverse engineering. It will pay dividends.
