Recently something crossed my newsfeeds that made me think of my Dad. He was a very wise man in many ways and completely daft in others if I am honest, but that’s another story. He had to leave school very young, which he always regretted but, despite that, he never stopped learning. He would frequently say that ‘a day when you don’t learn something new is a wasted day’. He, along with a wonderful History teacher, instilled into me a lifelong love of learning and thirst for knowledge.
I often think of my Dad as I wander the web, he would have loved it. I can just imagine him creating a conversation just so that he could throw in the latest obscure tidbit of knowledge that he had dug up. The thing he would have loved most are the learning opportunities that many of us don’t realise are there.
Until it turned up in a news article earlier this week, I was completely unaware that pretty much all MIT course materials are available for use online, freely available for you to use. What an incredible resource! You may think as an online marketer such things would be of little use but I would argue that point with you – and I would win.
All knowledge is useful, it underpins everything we do. In the current online climate you must generate good quality content if you want your sites to survive. To do that you need both the knowledge and an understanding of how to share it.
There are more people out there selling you courses on what to do with content than I can count. Some are good, most are rubbish. As always there’s a big ‘but’ in there. Before you can do anything with content, you need to have the knowledge to create it. Thankfully spun articles and shoddy research won’t do any more, you have to produce something of worth and value to your readers. What an untapped resource these University and College courses are. I’ll bet there are even ones that will teach you what to do with your content for free as well.
ITunesU is another gem most people don’t realise is there. A huge collection of educational resources sitting there waiting for you to stumble across it. Presentations Skill for New Ventures, Advanced Writing for Business, The Practice of Online Journalism are just a few things that might be of interest.
There is a hidden treasure trove out there from Institutions and Universities such as Oxford, MIT, Cranfield, Harvard, Yale, Cambridge that will help you broaden your mind and build your business.
I’ve listed a few access points below and will add to it as time goes on – feel free to add any you know of in the comments. In the meantime, make my Dad happy, don’t waste a day, all that knowledge is sitting there waiting for you – go grab it!
