Life Gets in the Way

I read an interesting post on one of my favourite blogs yesterday which just about summed up where I’ve been for the last couple of weeks.  Sometimes, don’t you find that life gets in the way of your life?  I’m fairly disciplined in my working habits.  You have to be when you have as many balls in the air as I do.  Then something happens and whilst you don’t drop the balls, you certainly don’t juggle them as fast…. And that makes you stop and think.

When everything goes on as normal I manage work, domesticity, family, leisure and so on without too many problems (this is the point at which my dearly beloved is going to go ‘humph!’ – I couldn’t do it without his help, not to mention the cleaner, the gardener and the ironing lady…..) but it doesn’t take much to knock that carefully balanced existence into touch.

It started with my birthday – I am a great believer in celebrating birthdays which as much gusto as I can muster, I’m not coy or shy about my age – in fact I’m proud to have made 52 with most of my wits intact!  The birthday celebrations entailed a day out at a Craft Show with friends and a party where much good cheese and good wine was consumed. Ooops, that was the work schedule going bump!  Then came my one year Breast Cancer Check up, that was/is a nervy one – still waiting for the results…. Ooops, there goes a bit more of the work schedule.  Next visitors coming for a few days – that crashing sound is my weekly lace class flying through the window.

Easter comes upon us – well that blows the schedule out of the water….. Settle down, dust it off, rewrite schedule – OK back on track!  Get new edition of my Squidoo book, The Silver Lining, (now with affiliate program) completed so I’m beginning to feel back in control again.  Visitors stay extra days – the shattering sound is the schedule splintering again.  Never mind, as the lace class goes flying through the window again for another week, swiftly followed by my quilting group, my beauticians appointment (trust me – I need it!) and as for work…  Rewrite the schedule again, fitting in the extra work one has just taken on.  Short break here to write note to self – must tell dearly beloved about this before he reads the blog post…  Sudden mental scream as I realise that blog posts must have been the gurgling sound that I couldn’t identify as yet another portion of time disappeared into the black hole of distractions that is life at the moment.  Then there’s the training for the Moonwalk – I should be walking dozens of miles a week by now – and I’m not, and the event is only a few weeks away…… like I said – life gets in the way of your life.

I was feeling almost guilty about all this (which is most unusual for me because I don’t do guilt generally) when I read a post on Toast & Egg & Me entitled ‘Do We Need a Break From Blogging?’  I often find myself nodding sagely in agreement when I read this blog and this was no exception.  My reasons for taking a break might not be so well thought out but I suspect the results will be the same.  Whatever the reason for taking a break from something you love doing, more often than not you return refreshed, reinvigorated and with more to give.

So the schedule is rewritten a bit more realistically to allow time for life to get in the way and to provide those breaks which are necessary to keep the creative juices flowing….watch this space for the results and there might even be photos thanks to the splendid new camera I had for my birthday!
