Life has been a bit hectic of late, and when that happens I find myself getting short tempered and even more grumpy that usual. However sometimes it produces a more philosphical mood - or like today a combination of both. I know it’s difficult to imagine but it happens.
I’m a great believer that old fashioned down to earth common sense is often the best way way forward. We all know that many problems in life don’t have solutions, merely a best way forward and that way is often dictated by common sense, the logical thing to do, the obvious solution - call it what you will. However I am beginning to wonder if I am one of the few remaining people on this planet who still possesses that rare commodity. Why do I think it is rare - I will tell you a tale.
When I got back from my training walk this morning I was cold, tired and just a tad crotchety (now there’s a surprise!). My dearly beloved was still tucked up warm in bed but he did have Tea prepared for me which is always a good move. Prior to having my shower I sat on the bed drinking the Tea and watching the morning news magazine programme on the TV. There was an item about hearing problems in the young. I have an interest in health matters so I pricked up my ears. If I had not been shaking my head at the sheer, crass stupidity of it all I would probably have exploded (correction - I did explode but only in a very minor way!)
The thrust of the article was an announcement by a UK charity that many young people were risking hearing damage because of the loud music in Clubs, at Concerts and so on - not to mention MP3 Players, iPods and the like. Pretty blonde reporter was sent off to interview youthful music producer bemoaning the damage to his hearing, to visit clubs etc etc. Comparisons with pneumatic drills, aircraft taking off and vacuum cleaners were made. Professional audiologists were interviewed, hearing tests administered to said reporter, much hot air was spouted by many eminent experts.
Vast amounts of air time were devoted to the search for a solution. Huge numbers of emails and phone calls were broadcast. Discussions on the types of ear plugs that should be used, how they should be redesigned, how they should be given to you free of charge when you go to clubs and concerts went on ad nauseam. They should even be made into a ‘fashion item’ opined one nitwit. By this point I have to say steam was coming out of my ears (does that cause hearing damage?) because no one, not one single person came up with the simple, easy common sense solution. Forgive me if I shout here, needs must in order to be heard over the racket of absolute drivel coming form the so called experts ….
TURN THE VOLUME DOWN.

Perfect solution!! If we didn’t live in such a materialistic world, that solution would have had a better chance of being promoted — but you can’t make any money with that problem solver.
Nope! Turn the volume down in those clubs and people will stop coming in and buying drinks.
I guess the audiologists and the ear plug makers could pick up a few bucks, but the desire for louder and louder looks like it’s going to win for now — at least until we learn that what we’re really looking for is more silence in our lives.
I think I’ll opt for Silence — there’s a wonderful peace there.
